Then, in my early 20s, a long-term client asked if I knew someone who did renovations. I took the leap and accepted the job. It turned out great, and the pay was solid — so I expanded into pool renovation. Renovation is truly a fulfilling experience. We tear into projects without knowing exactly what the original builder had done, and transform something old and dilapidated into a beautiful backyard oasis.

For years, friends urged me to start building pools, saying things like, "You know everything about pools — you should start building them." I always declined, saying it wasn't in my wheelhouse. Eventually, however, my doctor asked if I knew a pool builder, to which I replied, "Yes, I can build your pool, Doc." He became my first pool build client. Before I even completed his pool, I had signed two more clients and was building three pools simultaneously. That was 27 years ago.
